Help the Homeless Benefit in The Comedy Lounge
  view calendar

A group of local comedians rented the Lounge to produce their own show to help raise awareness for homelessness.

Did you know that across the United States, 675,000 people are homeless on any given night? In conjunction with the 22nd Annual Help the Homeless Walkathon on Saturday, November 21, a gaggle of comics band together to perform a standup comedy showcase to raise money and awareness for the plight of the homeless:

Freddi Vernell: After graduating from college and building a successful career, Freddi realized that something was missing in her life. A friend and Oprah Winfrey (several episodes) encouraged her to live her passion. She embraced her inner clown and has built an impressive resume opening for national acts such as DL Hughley, Margret Cho, and John Witherspoon. Freddie has performed at Carolines, The DC Improv, The Comedy Zone, The Sage Theater on Broadway, Uptown in Atlanta, and the Paramont Theater in California. Her face was seen on bus and subway ads for Comcast Television in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia. She's also gained popularity as the On-Air Hollywood Gossip on WPGC 95.5's Donnie Simpson Morning Show!

Phil Mause: Phil's parents couldn't afford to buy him a computer. Their only investment in his future was a nuclear fall-out shelter where the family hid for hours after every air raid siren (and after every noon lunch siren - since the two sirens sounded the same). While huddling in the fall-out shelter, Phil began to develop that unique combination of determination, egomania, and schizophrenia that is essential for a successful standup career. Starting at age 17, Phil developed a comic persona which involves an uncanny impersonation of a clueless senior citizen. It was only after 43 years of failure that the bit finally began to "click" as Phil reached his 60's. Phil appears frequently in New York and Washington DC at The Broadway Comedy Club; The NY Improv; The DC Improv; The Baltimore Comedy Factory; The Bethesda Hyatt; and Topaz Hotel.

Lisa Fine: Lisa was always the quiet girl in class who would make comments under her breath that the class clown would overhear and say out loud. For years, she thought she was too reserved and soft-spoken for comedy, but then someone told her stand up comedians use microphones! Since then, Lisa has performed at comedy clubs around the D.C. area. Lisa is fast becoming a household name (but that may be because lots of households have someone named Lisa in them).

Giovanni Diviacchi: The author of two joke books available on Amazon.com, "How Many Clients Does It Take To Change A Lightbulb: A Lawyer Strikes Back" and "Bring on the Funny: A Businessman's Joke Book", both of which have been awarded the prestigious The Stephen T. Colbert Award For The Literary Excellence, Giovanni's performance credits include the DC Improv in Washington DC, the Comedy Studio in Boston, ImprovOlympic in Chicago, Yuk Yuks in Toronto, and the Peoples Improv Theater in New York. Giovanni is a clever and inventive performer with a very affable presence who always puts on an enjoyable show. And he likes pie.

Frank Schuchat: Frank received his law degree from Georgetown, where he was editor in chief of the Georgetown Law Revue (that's Revue), the humorous periodical for the legal profession. About the time Newt Gingrich was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, Frank relocated his law practice to Denver. He has been performing stand-up comedy in clubs and at corporate and charity events for ten years. He especially likes doing shows in Washington because you can use Newt as a punchline and people don't think you are talking about some strange amphibian (even though that is the reference.)
